With a picture of whole grain on the front, it definitely looks healthy compared to the other cereals on the aisle, but is it all just a marketing tactic?

As you can see from the label above, this cereal contains a range of nutrients and vitamins. Something that jumps out straight away is the high fiber content of the cereal. Although this is marketed on the front of the box along with the protein content, it’s still important to mention due to the lack of fiber a lot of diets have today. 13g of fiber is a considerable amount considering most Americans don’t eat the recommended daily intake of 30g. Just by eating this cereal for breakfast, an individual would already have consumed 43% of the recommended daily fiber. This obviously gives the cereal some healthy points!
But that’s not all that’s healthy about this Kashi GOLEAN cereal, it also has a relatively high protein content compared to similar cereals. For a whole grain cereal, GOLEAN contains a relatively high amount of sugars. To put it into perspective for you, a 58g serving of contains 8g of sugar. That might not sound like a lot, but according to the American Heart Association, women should eat less than 24g of added sugar per day while men should eat less than 36g. With one serving providing 8g of sugars, you’ll need to watch what else you eat throughout the day to ensure you don’t overdo it.
Is Kashi Cereal Healthy?
Overall, compared to other junk filled breakfast cereals on the market, Kashi cereals our pretty healthy. Not only do they contain a good amount of fiber protein and whole grain nutrition, but they also don’t include any added artificial colors or flavors. The only criticism about Kashi cereals is their sugar content. Although it’s not stated how much of these sugars are added sugars, if you compare the cereal to over whole grain cereals then you should notice it is a bit higher.
Don’t let this put you off though, it just means if you were thinking about sprinkling some sugar on top to sweeten the taste then don’t! Instead, try sprinkling some fruit on such as bananas, blackberries, or even sultanas.
